Details on Your Before-Bed Oral Hygiene Routine

If you want a strong and healthy smile, then oral hygiene is key. You need to make sure and clean your teeth and gums every morning and every night. Because many choose to brush their teeth in the morning and deeply clean their teeth at night, Dr. Nitya Balan and our dental team will be happy to tell you exactly how to perform an accurate oral hygiene routine before bed.

First, brush your smile with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It’s best to scrub for two minutes and thoroughly clean each quadrant of the mouth. This means you should categorize your smile into four sections then clean each section in the same amount of time.

Second, floss your teeth with floss, a flossing stick, or a water flosser—whatever product you prefer. As you floss, be gentle around the gums. It’s important not to injure them. It’s also recommended to remove as much plaque as you can when you clean the crevices of your smile.

Third, rinse your mouth with a mouthwash that can benefit your teeth and gums. This can be fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash. As you rinse, follow the instructions on the bottle because it should tell you the recommended amount of time to swish. This can further clean your smile and give you fresh breath.

Fourth, if you have one, put your retainer or mouthguard in your mouth. The retainer can help keep your teeth aligned after braces and the mouthguard can protect your teeth if you grind them at night.
