Gum disease is a problem that affects far too many adults in today’s world. The worst part is, it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, it’s entirely possible to avoid gum disease – or periodontitis, as it’s formally called – altogether if you’re willing to take care of your oral health.

Let’s look at what Dr. Nitya Balan recommends you do to avoid gum disease.

Consistent oral health routine

The most important thing you can do to avoid contracting gum disease is maintaining a consistent oral health routine. You need to brush twice daily, for at least two minutes each time, in addition to flossing. You only need to floss once a day, however.

The act of consistent brushing and flossing eliminates the plaque that builds up around your gum line that leads to gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.

Regular screenings

Unfortunately, some people are predisposed to contract gum disease thanks to genetics. Even if you have great oral health, you may be at risk for gum disease if there’s a history of it in your family.

That’s why you need regular screenings to ensure that you’re not slowly developing gum disease over time. Our team here at Discovery Park Dental can screen for gum disease.
