The most important thing you can do to avoid contracting gum disease is maintaining a consistent oral health routine. You need to brush twice daily, for at least two minutes each time, in addition to flossing. You only need to floss once a day, however.
The act of consistent brushing and flossing eliminates the plaque that builds up around your gum line that leads to gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.
Unfortunately, some people are predisposed to contract gum disease thanks to genetics. Even if you have great oral health, you may be at risk for gum disease if there’s a history of it in your family.
